Shuwalid

Shuwalid is an annual three-day festival observed by the Harari people of Ethiopia. The holiday, registered as an Intangible Cultural Heritage by the UNESCO, commemorates the completion of six days of voluntary fasting undertaken to make up for missed days during Ramadan. The celebration takes place at the shrines of Aw Shulum Ahmed and Aw Akebara, located at the main entrance gates of the historic walled city of Harar.
The festival begins with prayers and spiritual chants, followed by the recitation of scriptures, as well as traditional music and dance performances. It concludes with blessings offered to the community. Shuwalid brings together people of all ages and genders, strengthening social bonds and cultural identity. It also provides an important platform for elders to pass on their wisdom, experiences, and blessings to younger generations, while giving youth the opportunity to learn about their cultural values, norms, and traditions.
