Negash: Africa’s First Muslim Settlement

Discover Negash, also known as Al Nejash, a place of profound history and spiritual significance. This northern Ethiopian town is recognized as Africa’s first Muslim settlement. During the time of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), when the Quraysh persecuted him and his followers, he advised some of his companions: “Go to Abyssinia, for there is a king there under whom no one is wronged, and it is a land of truth.”  Following his guidance, his daughter Rukiya, her husband Uthman, and twelve companions embarked on a journey to seek refuge in Ethiopia, leaving their homes behind to escape persecution.

Welcomed by the just king of Ethiopia, Ashama ibn Abjar (Najashi), they were granted protection and a permanent residence. Many of these companions lived in Ethiopia for nearly 15 years, some eventually returning to Madinah, while others remained and passed away there. Today, Negash remains a sacred site, with the cemetery of Al Nejash Mosque preserving the resting places of Rukiya, her husband, and their companions.

Negash is also closely tied to other early Islamic figures, such as Bilal ibn Rabah, the Ethiopian companion who became the first Mu’adhin, calling the Adhan (Islamic call to prayer), and Umm Ayman (Barakah), who devotedly served the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and cared for him throughout his life. Their legacy highlights Ethiopia’s deep connection to the origins of Islam and its role in nurturing the early Muslim community.
