Description

Meskel is one of the most sacred religious celebrations in Ethiopia, commemorating the discovery of the True Cross by Saint Helena in the 4th century. Recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage, the event begins on September 26 with the preparation of the Demera – a towering conical structure of wood decorated with flowers. On the 27th, massive crowds gather at Meskel Square in Addis Ababa for liturgical services, religious processions, and the lighting of the Demera by Orthodox priests. The faithful mark the ashes on their foreheads with a cross, symbolizing devotion and spiritual renewal. Across the country, Christians celebrate the holiday with reverence, prayer, and traditional rituals passed down for generations.
