Description

Enkutatash, meaning "Gift of the Jewels," is Ethiopia's New Year celebration steeped in biblical and historical significance. Celebrated at the end of the rainy season, it coincides with the blooming of the unique Adey Abeba (Meskel Flower), symbolizing renewal, hope, and fresh beginnings. Legend has it that the festival's name originates from the Queen of Sheba, who was gifted lavish jewels by King Solomon during her visit to Jerusalem around this time. Ethiopians mark the occasion with family gatherings and blessings for the year ahead. Young girls dressed in traditional attire visit neighbors, singing New Year songs and presenting bouquets of flowers or holiday cards. In return, they often receive money as a token of blessing.
