Ashenda, also known by local names such as Ashendeye, Shadey, Solel, and Aynewari, is a vibrant festival celebrated by young girls in northern Ethiopia. It follows a 15-day fasting period, known as Fiesta, observed by Ethiopian and Eritrean Orthodox Christians in honor of the Virgin Mary of Zion. This winter event holds both religious and cultural significance, offering young girls a chance to shine. Dressed in colorful traditional attire, they gather in groups to sing and dance through their towns and cities. Over three days, they visit various places, collecting gifts from strangers along the way. On the main holiday, the girls begin their day with church services, circling the church three times while singing songs of gratitude to God, before continuing their joyful celebrations.
